(Simo) Paternity leave is over and I'm returning to work Thursday morning. For every day during the three past weeks I've had no doubt about being in the right place. Especially with all three girls so young I did feel that taking the whole time right in the beginning was absolutely necessary for bootstrapping the daily life with a new baby in house.

I have been also very happy; Happy that everything went well at the hospital, and that Piritta and the newcomer are both in good health. Happy that Kerttu and Armi has taken the new little sister "in" with pride, joy and curiosity. .. and happy to really just having spent time with my family. Now we all are ready for the next step - the everyday life with all the routines.

Coincidentally the snow fell yesterday morning and while making Kerttu and Army very delighted, it sets the new standard for my "healthy commuting" efforts; My bike has just been serviced, and it has now spiked tires for the first time. I also bet that clothing for the biking/train/running/work has to be iterated couple times before it reaches the optimum.

(Simo) Isyysvapaa on nyt ohi ja palaan huomenna torstaina sorvin ääreen. Yhtenäkään päivänä tämän vapaan aikana en ole epäillyt olevani oikeassa paikassa. Eritoten kun kaikki kolme tyttöä ovat niin nuoria tunsin että koko vapaan ottaminen heti alkuun oli tarpeellista arjen käynnistämiseksi.

Olen ollut myös hyvin onnellinen; Onnellinen siitä että sairaalassa kaikki meni hyvin ja että Piritta sekä vauva ovat hyvissä voimissa. Onnellinen siitä että Kerttu ja Armi ovat ottaneet uuden tulokkaan mukaan ylpeydellä, ilolla ja uteliaisuudella. ..ja onnellinen viettäessäni aikaa perheen kanssa. Nyt olemme valmiita seuraavaan askeleeseen - tavalliseen arkeen kaikkine rutiineineen.

Tänä talvena lumen tulo ajoittui juuri tämän vapaan loppuun. Sen lisäksi että Kerttu ja Armi suorastaan pursuavat intoa ulkoiluun tosissaan alkanut talvi nostaa rimaa kesällä alkamaani "terveelliseen työmatkailuun; Hain polkupyörän juuri huollosta - nyt nastarenkailla varustettuna ensimäistä kertaa. Vaatetustakin pitänee iteroida vielä useampaan kertaan jotta saan pyöräily/juna/juoksu/työnteko -yhdistelmän optimaaliseksi.

Third daughter!

In the wee hours of the November 12th, a third daughter was born in our family! Gorgeous, beautiful and healthy baby girl has strategic measures of 51,5 centimeters and 3390 grams. Kerttu and especially Armi are very proud big sisters and just saw the new princess in the evening. As this was the most natural births of the three (despite the couple regulatory dramatic moments), also Piritta is revovering well and we're expecting both back at home early next week. I will post couple public pics in next few days both here and in flickr.

Marraskuun kahdennentoista päivän ensimmäisinä tunteina syntyi perheeseemme kolmas tytär! Kaunis ja terve tyttövauva omaa seuraavat strategiset mitat: 51,5cm ja 3390g. Kerttu ja erityisesti Armi ovat erittäin ylpeitä isosiskoja nyt kun näkivät pikku prinsessan juuri illalla ensi kertaa. Koska itse synnytys pakollisine jännityksen hetkineen oli lopulta luonnollisin tähänastisista myös Piritta on toipumassa hyvin ja odotamme molempia kotiin alkuviikosta. Laitan muutaman kuvan julkisesti näkyviin sekä tänne että flickriin muutaman päivän kuluessa.

Hämeenlinna

A quick post to end a year (!) of hiatus on this blog: A lot has happened, but also a lot of comfortable routines and day-to-day activities have settled down. Here's a recap:

We've settled down in Hämeenlinna. We have spacious house to live in, in a suburban neighborhood. We greatly enjoyed the splendid weather of late last summer. Now we have also space and spare room(s) to host guests, which is important for us as the family and friends often travel long distances to us.
Having girls are at daycare, and other workday routines have settled in. Autumn of 2010 brought a big change to our life as Piritta started working again. This meant that Kerttu and Armi were to spend long working hours at daycare. Thankfully we found very good small unit with just 8 children, minded by two adults. Having the girls at first in a same groups was a must for us.
Work commuting routines have also worked surprisingly well. On a normal workday we all leave home together, and after dropping kids at daycare I drive to Riihimäki with Piritta. We drive to Pirittas workplace, where from I continue a 1.5 kilometer more by foot to my work. During summertime I often have jogging gear on and continue for couple kilometers more after dropping my back to work for a proper run. As Pirittas workday ends earlier, she usually picks the girls and I return later on via public transportation.

So, as referred already life is pretty normal, but in a good way. I will come back with some photos and more updates soon. I promise soon means significantly less than year! For those eager to follow more personal and timely updates check my twitter updates or Facebook.

Pikainen kirjoitus yli vuoden (!) bloggaustauon jälkeen: Paljon on ehtinyt tapahtua mutta samalla on tapahtunut paljon tervettä laskeutumista turvallisiin rutiineihin. Tässä yhteenveto:

Olemme asettuneet aloillemme Hämeenlinnaan. Asuntomme on tilava omakotitalo varsin tyypillisellä lähiöalueella (kaupunginosa on kaiketi Lakee?). Vuoden 2010 loppukesän hieno sää auttoi kotiutumistamme paljon. Nyt meillä on myös tilaa ja makuuhuone(ita) vieraita varten, mikä on tärkeää sukulaisten ja ystävien ollessa usein pitkänkin matkan päässä.
Tytöt ovat olleet syksystä asti päivähoidossa. Viime syksyllä Piritan aloittaessa työt olivat Kertun ja Armin päivittäiset rutiinit ison muutoksen edessä. Kodin asemesta he viettäisivät pitkät päivittäiset työajat päivähoidossa. Onneksi löysimme sopivan ryhmäperhepäivähoitopaikan jossa on kahdeksan lasta ja kaksi hoitajaa. Tytöt pääsivät siis samaan ryhmään mikä oli meille todella tärkeää.
Työmatkajärjestelyt ovat toimineet myös yllättävän hyvin. Tavallisena työpäivänä lähdemme koko perheen voimin yhtäaikaa kotoa. Tyttöjen hoitoon viemisen jälkeen jatkamme Piritan kanss kahdestaan Riihimäelle. Auto jää piritan työpaikalle - ala-asteen koululle 1.5 km päässä omasta työpaikastani - ja jatkan sieltä jalan. Sulan aikana vedän heti aamulla päälle lenkkivaatteet ja jatkan laukun viemisen jälkeen muutam an kilsan lisää aamulenkkiä - työajalla. Piritan työpäivä on usein selvästi lyhyempi ja hän hakee tytöt. Mie palaan kotiin käyttäen julkista liikennettä tai kimppakyytiä.

Niikuin aluksi viittasinkin on elämä hyvinkin tavallista mutta hyvällä tavalla. Palaan kuvien ja lisäpäivitysten muodossa pian. (Jep, tällä kertaa pian tarkoittaa huomattavasti vuotta lyhyempää aikaa ;) Mikäli haluatte seurata henkilökohtaisempia, ja päivittäisiä päivityksiä vilkaiskaa Twitteriä tai Facebookkia.

House for sale - asunto myytävänä!

For a bit over a month we're had our house for sale. So far there seem to be healthy interest in the property and we have had plenty of potential buyers visiting us. Despite good signs, we have not yet received good offers. We've got positive vibes that things start rolling soon. Nevertheless, go and check out our ads in following the links below - and if you know anyone looking for a place in capital area let them know!

Why are we selling? Well, I have been working at Riihimäki for Finnish Defence Forces almost a year now. The 80+ kilometer commute each way isn't really sustainable for many years, despite I've been enjoying the amount of audiobooks I have been able to devour during those drives. This autumn we will both be working on that rough area, and therefore it is only natural to make the move. As quite a lot is going to change in our daily lives we all feel excited and positively terrified at the same time.

UPDATE: The house has been sold! (Well the actual funds and property will exchange owners in June, but anyway..) Now, the challenge is where we will live from the beginning of June.. ;)

Asuntomme on ollut myynissä reilun kuukauden verran. Kiinnostusta on selvästi ilmassa, ja näytöissä on käynyt runsaasti väkeä. Hyvistä merkeistä huolimatta oikeita tarjouksia ei ole vielä tullut. Jotenkin nyt pääsiäisen jälkeen meillä on ollut sellaiset vibat että kohta alkaa tapahtumaan. Joka tapauksessa, käypä katsomassa asuntoilmoituksemme allaolevista linkeistä ja vinkkaa niistä eteenpäin jos joku tuttavasi on etsimässä asuntoa pääkaupunkiseudulta.

Miksi sitten olemme myymässä. No, miehän olen kulkenut Riihimäellä pv:n hommissa töissä jo melkein vuoden verran. Vaikka olenkin osaltaan nauttinut pitkistä ajomatkoista - eikä vähiten äänikirjojen ansiosta - ei yli 80km työmatka molempiin suuntiin ole oikein järkevä pidemmän päälle. Tulevasta syksystä eteenpäin tulemme molemmat olemaan töissä samalla alueella, on luonnollista että nyt on aika järjestää asumiskuviotkin kondikseen. Paljon palloja on ilmassa ja arkielämä on konkreettisesti muuttumassa ja paljon- hauskaa ja kauhiaa yhtäaikaisesti!

PÄIVITYS: Asunto on nyt myyty. (No oikeasti omistajuus vaihtuu kesäkuun aikana, mut diili on kuitenkin tehty!) Seuraava haaste onkin sitten se missä asumme heinäkuun alusta...

End-of-summer update

It was said on the news that this week will hold the last summerlike days in Finland this year. It was indeed very warm and sunny. As it is already well into september I thought a very short recap of this summer would be apt.

We all have enjoyed the summer a lot. The four-week holiday I had was a real treat to all of us - even though we did not travel abroad or other fancy things.

Zoos and home animal "yards" were guaranteed hit, and we did visit quite many of them. Even Armi, when not having her nap, did love to watch the animals, and grab some grass and try to feed them.

Armi is now very active walking toddler. The interaction with Kerttu has ignited some expected friction. Not really big fights yet but defending the right to e.g. hold to a certain toy is done with vigilance by both. We have to daily get in as a referee before the biting and shoving gets too dangerous. Very normal stuff, I guess. All-in-all the girls are behaving very well, eating well and sleeping well. We have also been very lucky and been all very healthy so far.

Kerttu talks a lot, and also in general does a lot of things in increasing pace. The imagination has also taken her ways of playing to new levels. Dolls and soft animals have started having names, and the things in play happen in many places between of which one has to transfer, using e.g. boat, bus, train etc. She is also eager in drawing and coloring, at the moment human shapes are drawn along these lines:

(ok, maybe there is usually also the hands, legs and some hair ;)

Now the autumn has brought us changes in daily/weekly routines. My work and Pirittas studies, childcare arrangements and hobbies. I am looking forward in how the weekly merry-go-around settles during the next few weeks. It is our first step towards the time when we both go to work - where from that will happen next year is whole another story - still a bit unknown to also us ourselves.

Huh, it's 2009?

Where did all that time go? The blog here has been in my mind many times during the past months but the updates just havent't happened. If nothing else, we've sent some pics once in a while on the flickr page, and I've been using jaiku frequently - something you can do while commuting ;) Piritta has also activated herself on facebook.

Enough about excuses. What has happened?

Well, now Armi is already 7 months and Kerttu two years and two months. Armi eats solids throughout the day aegrly and has now "woken up" regarding moving. It should be almost any day know that she catches the right combination of body movements which actually moves her to some direction on the floor. No teeth yet, but the same "any day now" applies to that.

Kerttu is speaking a lot and eagerly. Imagination starts to kick in on her stories and on the way she plays with the toys. Now also the interaction with the other kids is opening up - and she is filling the air with joyful chatter also in those situations. Kerttu loves to dance, move, play and sing with music. All this wonderful development has came with the spice of what the age of "terrible two" brings along. Challenging the authority and excercising with the word "NO!" is with us every day. As a parent one needs long nerves, but it's going ok. Kerttus strong temper was predicted already when she was a small baby.

We've been most of the time here at Espoo. Only for Christmas we did go to Raahe and spent there a week. I had a bit longer batch of holidays at the new year so we were able to small trips locally also in daytime.

All-in-all very full and home-centric life at the moment. Very little time for hobbies etc. We're thankful that the kids have been relatively healthy and we have been able to sleep the nights very well.

Minnekäs muutama kuukausi hujahti tässä välissä? Tämä blogi on kyllä ollut mielessä useasti mutta päivitystä ei vaan ole kuulunut. Noh, flickriin olemme heitelleet kuvia silloin tällöin ja mie olen käyttänyt jaikua aika ahkerasti - jotakin jota voi tehdä työmatkalla ;) Piritta on aktivoitunut myös facebookissa.

Noh, selittelyt sikseen. Mitäs oikein on tapahtunut?

Armi on jo seitsemän kuukautta ja kerttu kaksi vuotta kaksi kuukautta. Armi syö kiinteitä innokkaasti jo aamusta iltaan ja on "herännyt" vihdoin myös liikkumisen suhten. Ihan minä päivänä tahansa hän hiffaa sen miten lattialla pääsee etenemään. Hampaat eivät ole ilmestyneet vieläkään mutta sama "minä päivänä tahansa" pätee tähänkin.

Kerttu puhuu paljon ja innolla. Mielikuvitus on alkanut näkyä hänen tarinoissaan ja leikeissään. Nyt myös vuorovaikutus toisten lasten kanssa on avautumassa - ja silloinkin Kerttu täyttää ilman iloisella puheensorinalla. Kerttu rakastaa tanssia, liikkua, soittaa ja laulaa musiikin tahdissa. Kaikki tämä hieno kehitys on tullut samalla uhmaiän ilmaantumisen kanssa. Vanhempien päätösvaltaa haastetaan ja EI-sanan käyttöä harjoitellaan joka päivä. Vanhenpana tässä vaaditaan hermoja mutta yllätyksenä tämä ei kyllä tule - jo pikkuvauvana Kerttu oli jo aika topakka mielenliikkeissään.

Paljon emme ole Espoosta pois lähteneet. Joulun olimme Raahessa noin uuteen vuoteen asti. Minulla oli hieman pidemmät joululomat jolloin kerkisimme hieman myös liikkua täällä lähiympäristössä päiväsaikaan.

Kaiken kaikkiaan täyttä, kotikeskeistä elämää tällä hetkellä. Harrastuksiin ja sensellaisiin on vain vähän aikaa. Kiitollisia tässä täytyy olla siitä että lapset ovat olleet suhteellisen terveitä ja yöt menevät pääasiassa nukkuessa eikä kukkuessa..

Sisters - Sisarukset

Huomasimme että emme ole ottaneet / muistaneet ottaa / pystyneet ottaa niin paljon yhteiskuvia siskoista kuin ehkä pitäisi. Pari iltaa sitten koetimme ryhdistäytyä ja tässä on ainakin tytöt samassa kuvassa. Jostakin syystä yleensä niin iloinen Armi menee kameran ilmestyessä aina totiseksi.

Tänään oli isäinpäivä. Heti aamusta tuli hyvä fiilis kun Kerttu lauloi ".. paljon onnea vaan isä-tyttö.. ".

We did notice that we have not taken / remembered to take / were not able to take so many photos of the two daughters togeter that we have originally thought. Couple nights ago we tried to take snapshots how they look together now - here's one example. For some reason usually quite happy-face Armi goes very serious each time she sees the camera.

It was fathers day today. The feeling was happy right from the morning as Kerttu sang to me ".. happy birthday to father-girl, happy birthday to you .. " (are there other kind of celebrations than birthdays, anyway?)

Winter preparations - Talvivalmisteluja

Syksy on jo pitkällä. Ulkona on par'aikaa menossa taloyhtiön siivoustalkoot. Vaihdoimme juuri Pirren kanssa vuoroa haravointihommissa. Täällä sisällä on hiljainen hetki kun molemmat tytöt nukkuvat ovat nukkumassa.

The autumn is now about turning to winter. At the moment all the neighbours are cleaning up the last autumn leaves together and preparing the houses to winter. We did just switch with Pirre on the sweeping duty. Over here inside its the quiet moment of the day as both girls are taking their afternoon naps.

I did not have time to post this until one day later. Today it has been a very nice fathers day. (Not weather-wise - the pic above is not from today! ;)

Enpä saanut tätä lyhyttä postaustakaan ulos eilen. Tänään on ollut oikein mukava isäinpäivä. (Tuo ylläoleva kuva ei ole todellakaan otettu tänään, sää oli melkeinpä päinvastainen. ;)

Here are two quick time lapse videos I took from a walk to the playground we commonly visit (via a grocery store yard) and back. Even though the youtube quality is not that great and the camera - attached to the shaky buggy handle - produced blurry images once in a while, you should be able to get a glimpse of the surroundings of our everyday life ;)

Tässä on kaksi pysäytyskuva-videota kävelyreissulta kaupan pihan kautta Kauklahden Palttina-Talon leikkikentälle ja takaisin. Vaikka youtube ei kovin selkeää videota pysty toistamaan - ja kamera tuotti kärryn hantaakiin sidottuna välillä suttuisia kuvia - ainakin vilahdus arkipäivän tallustelusta pitäisi välittyä.

Armi Aino Maria Huopio

Our youngest daughter got her name officially at the Christening ceremony yesteday. The full name is Armi Aino Maria Huopio. She will be called Armi. As seen on picture, Armi took the occasion in very relaxed manner.

Nuorimmainen tyttäremme sai eilen virallisesti nimensä ristiäisjuhlassa. Nimi on kokonaisuudessaan Armi Aino Maria Huopio. Armi on kutsumanimi. Kuten kuvasta näkyy Armi otti tilaisuuden hyvin rennosti.

In the following group photo theres our family with the Godparents who were able to travel to Espoo. Of the Godparents Outi and Adrian Moore are not in the picture as they're living at Australia.

Seuraavassa ryhmäpotretissa on perheemme lisäksi paikalle päässeet kummit. Kummeista Outi ja Adrian Moore eivät päässeet paikalle koska he asuvat tällä hetkellä Australiassa.

The other day we visited a small beach nearby at Hvitträsk. Kerttus comment on the big lake was "Big Bath". She was pretty excited walking at the shallow water. Relaxing moments for the whole family, more of this!

Tässä muutama päivä sitten kävimme tässä lähistöllä Hvitträskin rannalla. Kerttu tokaisi rantaveteen totutellessaan "Iso Kylpy!". Matalassa vedessä kahlailu oli selvästikin kivaa ja rannalla oleilu mukavaa koko perheelle - tätä lisää!

New words and phrases appear to Kerttus vocabulary ever day. Now the dialog between us and her is not just repetition of the names of the activity or objects around her, it is beginning to be a real dialog. This wonderful phase brings along the first hints of the toddlers thoughts in spoken form. One anecdote from couple days back: I was at the sandbox with Kerttu just after the rain. I said to her that "Daddy knows now after the rain it is very good time to do sand cakes". Kerttu answered in midst of shoveling sand: "Daddy knows - Kerttu does!"

Uusia sanoja ja ilmaisuja ilmestyy Kertun sanavarastoon jatkuvasti. Nykyään keskustelu hänen kanssaan ei ole ympärillä olevan maailman kuvailemista/nimien toistamista vaan oikeaa keskustelua. Tämä todella hauska vaihe tuo meidän korviimme ensimäiset vihjeet taaperon ajatusmaailmasta puhutussa muodossa. Pari päivää sitten sateen jälkeen olin hiekkalaatikolla Kertun kanssa ja tokaisin "Isä tietää että nyt sateen jälkeen on tosi hyvä aika tehdä hiekkakakkuja". Tähän Kerttu vastaa lapioiden hiekkaa: "Isä tietää, Kerttu tekee!"

Today 19.06.2008 at 08:38am a baby girl was born to our family. Strategic measures 3080g and 51cm. She was born a bit early on pregnancy week 37. Some extra monitoring and help on breathing is needed but otherwise everything is fine for both baby and the mother! I can't wait to get the girls home!

Tänään 19,6.2008, 08:38 aamulla meille syntyi tyttövauva. Strategiset mitat 3080 grammaa ja 51 cm. Hän syntyi hieman suunniteltua aikaisemmin raskausviikolla 37. Vauvan hengitys kaipaa hieman seurantaa ja avustamista, muuten kaikki on hyvin niin vauvan kuin äidinkin osalta. Voi kun saisin tytöt nopeasti kotiin!

As the previous posting was also telling, at this age children learn fast. And they are eager to anything. Kerttu is no exeption: New words, new concepts, drawing, playing at the sandbox, listening and dancing to music, spotting new animals - every day something new.

We're also witnessing first signs of the first "negative age" (is this the term?) - the word "no", or pehaps more the expressing the meaning of that word with all possible means start to show up here and there.

Niinkuin edellisestä postauksesta pystyi päättelemään tämänikäiset lapset oppivat nopeasti ja ovat yleensä innokkaita kaikkeen mahdolliseen. Kerttu ei ole poikkeus: Uusia sanoja, konsepteja, piirtämistä, leikkiä hiekkalaatikolla, musiikin kuuntelua ja siihen eläytymistä, uusien eläimien oivaltamista - joka päivä jotakin uutta.

Myös ensimmäiset merkit uhmaiästä ovat näkyvissä. Sana "ei" ei ole niinkään vielä esillä mutta kyllä kaikki muut mahdolliset keinot ilmaista sama juttu ;)

Friday night I was coming back home from Oslo and had just boarded a plane for quick one-hour flight - or so I thought I was doing. After waiting on Oslo airport tarmac for about six (!) hours, sitting on the plane, we were finally off to Helsinki. I was finally at home Saturday 4am. The reason: heavy snowstorm rained some 20cm wet snow - the conditions were so bad the airport was closed for traffic just before we got on our way.

If the flight would've been a bit later we would have been sent to hotel waiting for the next day. In the end I do not know which would have been better - at least I got home earlier but only with two-hours of sleep the whole night. Well, it is better recover at home than somewhere out there.

Perjantai-iltana olin palaamassa Oslosta ja juuri noussut koneeseen pikaista yhden tunnin lentoa varten - niinhän mie luulin. Pääsimme lähtemään noin kuuden (!) tunnin odotuksen jälkeen, koko sen ajan istuimme/notkuimme koneessa! Kotona olin vasta neljän maissa aamuyöllä. Syy: lumimyrsky satoi n. 20cm märkää lunta kentälle ja kenttä suljettiin lentoliikenteeltä juuri ennen kun pääsimme matkaan.

Jos koneen lähtö olisi ollut hetkenkin myöhemmin meidät olisi lähetetty hotelliin nukkumaan odottamaan seuraavaa päivää. Loppupeleissä en tiedä kumpi vaihtoehto olisi ollut parempi. Nyt pääsin aikaisemmin kotiin mutta vain kahden tunnin yöunella. Noh, kotona on kuitenkin parempi toipua kuin jossakin huitsin kukkasessa.

New year has begun mostly without snow. The weather has been ok, though so it's been the the winter activities and the light that has been missing. The last couple of weeks are the darkest ones in the year, anyway.

Kerttu is learning new things in fast pace: Walking and the balance is now so good that she can concentrate on actually doing things and reaching places. New words appear to vocabulary and they are also used in the right context. We might be far far away from conversation but it is still a wonder for us parents. ;)

Uusi vuosi on alkanut pääasiassa ilman lunta. Sää on ollut kuitenkin ihan ookoo, joten lähinnä olemme jääneet kaipaamaan lumitoimintaa ja valoa. Viime viikot kun ovat ne vuoden pimeimmät.

Kerttu oppii uusia asioita nopealla tahdilla: Kävely ja tasapaino alkavat olla jo niin hyvät että toiminta voi keskittyä varsinaiseen tekemiseen ja uusiin paikkoihin kurottamiseen. Uusia sanoja ilmestyy sanavarastoon ja niitä myös käytetään oikeassa yhteydessä. Vielä ollaan todella kaukana keskustelusta mutta silti se on ihmeellistä vanhemmille ;)

Christmas time at Lieksa (my hometown) was fun and time passed quickly. My brother was also there with his SO. The thing we did missed a lot was snow, and better winter weather altogether. The weather was exceptionally warm and wet for the season. On the picture above you can see my home buildings at the background, as well as the miserable snow situation. On the pic below there's a nice sunrise view from the front yard.

Joulun aika kotopuolessa Lieksassa oli mukava ja aika vilahti nopeasti. Veljeni oli myös paikalla kihlattunsa kanssa. Kaipasimme kyllä kovasti lunta ja yleensäkin parempaa talvisäätä. Ilma oli erikoisen lämmin ja märkä vuodenaikaan nähden. Kuvassa näkyy kotitaloni sekä surkea lumitilanne. Alla puolestaan näkyy auringonnousu ko talon etupihalta.

Phew! It has been quite a busy week. Pritta and Kerttu were at Raahe and I was on a work trip at Seattle. Both adjacent weekends were almost fully booked too which leaved no mercy to jet lag.. Oh well now back in normal routine, hopefully. By the way Kerttu took her first steps last weekend! Now the training continues slowly but surely!

Huh, olipa viikko. Tytöt olivat Raahessa ja meikkis Seattlessa työmatkalla. Tämän lisäksi viikonloput molemmilla puolilla olivat toki melkein täyteen buukattuja - ei armoa jet lagille! Toivottavasti arkirutiinit pääsevät taas vauhtiin. Muuten, Kerttu otti viikko sitten ensimäiset askeleensa (ilman tukea)! Nyt kävelyn treenaus jatkuu hitaasti mutta varmasti!

Kerttu is now 11 months old and is getting more and more an active member of the family. She is as adorable as ever! This week has been a bit sleepless as she caught a cold. It hasn't been very bad but the running nose affects the quality of sleep. Thank God is weekend now!

Kerttu on nyt 11 kuukautta vanha ja on yhä aktiivisempi osa perhettämme. Kulunut viikko on ollut vaihteeksi hieman uneton koska Kerttu nappasi jostakin pienen flunssanpoikasen. Tukkoinen ja samalla juokseva nenä vaikuttaa kaikkien unen laatuun tasapuolisesti. Noh onneksi nyt on viikonloppu!

Just next door to our house is now a large empty field which was used to grow some wheat. It has been publicly planned for build houses but there has been no news on the development since yesterday. Now some information has emerged that the town starts to build roads and municipal engineering stuff on it already this year - this means the year 2008 will be heavy construction just next door to ours.

Rivitalomme vieressä näkyvälle entiselle pellolle on ollut suunnitteilla jo pitkään uusi asuinalue. Aikomuksia enenpää ei ole kuitenkaan kuulunut ennen kuin vasta nyt: Kaupunki alkaa rakentaa teitä ja kunnallistekniikkaa jo kuluvana vuonna. Ensi vuonna siis naapurissa on odotettavissa melkoinen rakennuksen melske.

This pic is from couple weeks back, when the days were a bit more suitable bathing outside. At the picture the swimsuit was being tested before really using it on baby swim "lessons".

The inevident approach of the end of summertime (it is September after all) brings all kinds of activities back to day-to-day life: Obviously the work has started. Also Piritta has started to attend couple of courses at university (really starting next week). As hinted above we have started to go to the "baby swim" lessons - which we all have enjoyed a lot.

Kesän loppu on väistämättä lähellä. Tämä tuo mukaan arkeen paljon aktiviteetteja. Työt alkoivat jo hetki sitten. Pirre aloittaa opintojaan yliopistolla parin kurssin muodossa. Uimapuku tuli käyttöön vauvauinneissa - toistaiseksi menneet kaksi kertaa ovat olleet koko perheelle hauskoja tapauksia.

Now we have the pleasure of having at least four trains per hour to and from Helsinki (six at peak hours). Not bad at all compared to the twice a hour which we had before.

Kun E-junat alkoivat kulkea Kauklahteen asti yhteydet Helsingin suuntaan paranivat roimasti. Neljästä kuuteen junaa tunnissa ei ole paha ollenkaan kun bussejakin kulkee vielä entiseen malliin.

Arrived back home late last night. The flight back went surprisingly well, as Kerttu slept 1.5 hours at the plane.
The whole trip was really a success: Most importantly it was so nice to be able to meet so many people in comparably short time. Secondly the travelling with Kerttu was (again) a positive surprise, only gripe is the car travel which does not seem to be her favourite. Of course the very good weather and efficient shopping Monday were also helping the nice atmosphere. More talk and photos later on, now good night!

This year I (Simo) have pretty OK holidays, total of six weeks - I cannot complain! Because of this we will be able to come to UK for about a week, starting this Thursday! We're wery excited but also a bit anxious, this is a first real trip abroad with Kerttu onboard. And boy it does change things a bit! ;) I bet it will be fine, but the thing just makes the preparations more hassle than normally.

So, we will arrive at Heathrow in Thursday (2nd) afternoon, and leaving the next Wednesday (8th). From Saturday onwards we will be staying at an B&B at Woking. If you wish to meet and greet, and we've not made any plans with you before give us a buzz. Because of Kerttu's early sleeptime (7 to 8pm at latest) we will be retreating to the B&B rather early each day, but its possible to meet also there.

Phew, still at home even we were planning to leave for Lieksa and Raahe already three days ago. Kerttu got sick for the first time late friday night. Until last night she hasn't had fever anymore. At highest point the temperature was way over 39 degrees celsius. Even she's behaving now quite normally we did not want to go for long car ride before making sure everything is all right again. Therefore we will go for the doctor today to check that the ears and lungs are without anything suspicious.

This first experience has been easy and light, I presume, as everything else we have had with kerttu (fingers crossed!). However, it gave us healthy heads up to prepare for the next time which will come..

Huhhuh. Olemme vielä kotona vaikka tarkoitus oli lähteä juhannuspäivän aamuna mummolakiertueelle. Kertulle iski juuri edellisenä yönä kova kuume, jonkinmoinen kevyt flunssa oli kyseessä. Kovimmillaan kuume oli yli 39 astetta. Nyt ei enää kuumetta ole ollut mutta käymme lääkärissä vielä varmistamassa että korviin tai keuhkoihin ei ole jäänyt mitään epäilyttävää.

Kuten kaikessa muussakin Kertun kanssa (toistaiseksi!) tämäkin sairaus meni loppujen lopuksi hyvin kevyesti ohi. Jokatapauksessa hyvä kokemus siitä että mitä tuleman pitää seuraavalla kerralla..

New doors are being installed to our house. The door to backyard is already installed as is the new storage room door. At the picture you can see the new front door being hung already in its place - the old door retired already leaning on the fence.

Even this kind of small things can affect the looks of the house and the feeling when you're entering the building!

Kerttu turned recently 6 months old(!) A medical check-up soon followed. All OK and normal. Incidentally the measured weight is now exactly double the born-weight: 8100g, when the length has grown to 69cm.

She is very happy baby at this period of time. She loves everything and everybody, especially her own mirror image :-) She tries so hard to start to move on the floor! She has mastered rolling around for a while but the actually moving towards certain direction is still behind couple corners.

Kerttu täytti vastottain kuusi kuukautta(!). Samoihin aikoihin osunut neuvolakäynti kertoi kaiken olevan OK ja normaalilla tolalla. Hassu sattuma on että mitattu paino on nyt tasan kaksi kertaa syntymäpaino: 8100g. Viimeisin pituus on 69cm.

Tyttö on nykyään hyvin iloinen tapaus. Hän suorastaan pursuaa iloa kaikesta ja jokaisesta vastaantulevasta (etenkin kun väsy ei ole lähellä). Hän kokeilee niin kovasti alkaa liikkumaan lattialla mutta varsinainen johonkin suuntaan ryömiminen odottaa tulemistaan. Pyöriminen on ollut enemmän tai vähemmän hanskassa jo jonkin aikaa.

Kiinteden ruokien kokeilu on toden teolla alkanut. Aluksi kaikki on vain maistelua ja hiljakseen opettelua. Kuten kuvasta näkyy tämä opettelu ei aina ole sitä siisteintä hommaa. Voi vaan kuvitella että minkälaista meininki on silloin kun Kerttu opettelee syömään omin käsin! ;)

Mieliruokaa ovat erilaiset valmispuurot. Myös jotkut marjasoseet ovat käyneet ihan kohtuullisen hyvin kaupaksi

We've started the solid food offering as every day routine. Naturally at the beginning its just tasting and slow learning. As you can see from the picture the learing is not always the cleanest of activities. One can only imagine what is the picture when Kerttu starts to eat with her own hands :)

Her favourite dishes are ready-made porridges. Also some berries have tasted moderately well to her.

Sleep - Uni

The last couple of weeks have taught more of the effect and importance of sleep, and the effect of the lack of it. Getting used to less and worse quality sleep is one of the most common thoughts of the parenthood of a small
baby - and its true! 8) It has been actually very easy for us: just occasional sleepless nights lately, but even that has opened our eyes..

Latest Kerttu-trivia: when she was about 5 months she was 67cm tall and weighed good 7.8kg. We've started to feed her some non-milk food (beginnings of a new era for her).

Viime viikot ovat opettaneet meille lisää unen tärkeydestä, ja unen puutteen vaikutuksesta. Tottuminen lyhyempiin yöuniin ja huonompilaatuiseen uneen on yleisimpiä ajatuksia jotka liittyvät vanhemmuuteen - ja tottahan se on! ;) Meillä on Kertun kanssa käynyt tuuri - olemme tässä uniasiassakin päässeet todella helpolla. Viime viikkojen unettomat yöt ovat olleet vain poikkeus, mutta tämäkin poikkeus on avannut silmämme todellisuudelle..

Hieman uusinta Kerttu-triviaa: Viisikuukautisena hän oli 67cm pitkä ja painoi reippaat 7.8 kiloa. Olemme alkaneet syöttää hänelle varovasti kiinteitä ruokia - siis kokonaan uuden ajanjakson alku Kertulle.

Tämän kuvan ottamispäivänä Kerttu oli tasan neljä kuukautta vanha. Aika todellakin rientää! Edellisellä viikolla hänelle ilmaantui myös ensimäiset hampaat! Tästä on seurannut yövalvomista, kun ikenet kutiavat ja tekevät unesta selvästi kevyempää.

Saturday afternoon there was a group effort of all people living on the same rows of houses to clean up the common areas and e.g. install new post boxes ;) The weather has not really helped, light rain all the time. But at least no snow yet as in northern Finland.

The baby is due in next three weeks time, that's for sure. The calculated day is already next week but we have been prepared to wait a bit longer.

Tämä viikonloppu on hurahtanut syyshommissa. Taloyhtiön syystalkoissa siivottiin koko tontti ja mm. asennettiin uudet postilaatikot ;) Sadesää ei ole auttanut mutta onneksi ei ole ollut pakkasta niinkuin pohjoisemmassa.

Vauvan laskettu aika on jo ensi viikolla mutta uskoisimme että menee hieman pidempään. Joka tapauksessa jotakin tapahtuu kolmen viikon kuluessa!

Forgot my yahoo! account password (or at least got it locked with too many retries). Resetting the password proved to be more tricky than I thought: Yahoo! wants me to remember and type the address details I have on the account. It is not unreasonable to ask them but I do not know them - I created the yahoo account as a spam/IM account to start with! In addition to that, I bought the flickr pro account when the flickr still had their own separate accounts.

As the yahoo email support does not seem too helpful I tried new approach: As I still have the email-to-flickr settings valid, I posted the image above to show that I have at least some affiliation with the account.. Lets hope this and the flickr pro account purchase info helps..

After I get the account back I finally can empty the picture backlog..

Whew, it has been a busy couple of weeks! Packing and preparing and arranging everything for the move has been a usual chaos. A business trip to India just after the move weekend did make a hard deadline when everything had to be in order.

Anyway, here we are (more accurately Hansakallionkuja 12 A 6, 02780 Espoo) and most of the things start to be on the order. I will post couple photos from here soon.

BTW: Less than two months left to the set date for Pirittas pregnancy. That will surely be the next deadline to keep us busy. ;)

Huhhhuh, onpa ollut kiireiset pari viikkoa! Pakkaus ja valmistelu muuttoa varten oli tutun oloista kaaosta. Työmatka intiaan juuri muuttoviikonlopun jälkeen varmisti että ko viikonloppuna huhkittiin aamusta iltaan niin täällä Kökkelissä kuin Perkkaallakin.

Jokatapuksessa, täällä sitä ollaan (Osoite tarkemmin: Hansakallionkuja 12 A 6, 02780 Espoo ) ja suurin osa tavaroista alkaa olla paikallaan. Pistän kuvia kämpiltä verkkoon piakkoin.

Muuten: Jäljellä on enää vajaat kaksi kuukautta Pirittan laskettuun aikaan.. Siinä onkin seuraava "deadline" joka pitää meidät kiireisinä. ;)

EDIT: Heh, viikot ja kuukaudet olivat menneet sekaisin, laskettu aika on siis lokakuun lopussa eli vieläkin on muutama viikko edessä mikäli asiat etenevät niinkuin tähän asti.. ;)

Lomat ovat ohi tältä kesältä. Piritalla on toki vielä hieman vapaata jälkellä, riippuen siitä miten paljon sijaisuuksia hän saa/ottaa ennen äitiysloman alkua.

Suomen kesä on ollut kuuma mutta miellyttävä. Siksipä töihinpaluu ei ahdista niin paljoa kuin se voisi.. ;)

(Testaan samalla suurempaa kuvankokoa flickr-palvelusta postattaessa, onkohan tämä jo liian iso?)

Now it is midsummer eve, and we are leaving for the countryside. During this weekend most of the finns concentrate on enjoying the summer, each in their own way. For some this means retreat to summer cottages with the family and friends. For some it means hiking in the lapland. In any case, now the summer is as its best: light, warm, holidays are ahead.. ;-)

There is more or less three full weeks of holiday ahead, and there might be less updates on the blog. (apart from occasional mobile picture uploads..)

When you go in a book shop I have noticed that the selection of audiobooks has grown dramatically during the last year. They are rather expensive but still more and more popular. What I have tried and heard, they are quite nice change when you are driving or travelling otherwise long distances.

Afer returning from India, the weather had transformed: Sun was shining, it was getting warmer and warmer - and this all did seem to have a effect to all the people around. Yes, the winter is behind us!

This weekend is a "bank holiday weekend" also in Finland. The first of may and the day before are known as "Wappu" - a day to celebrate the sping. This time is very well adapted by the students as they will party almost a week in a row 8)

Intiasta palaamisen jälkeen huomasimme että sää oli muuttunut radikaalisti. Aurinko paistoi ja ilma lämpeni koko ajan - ja tämä kaikki muutti selvästi myös ihmisten fiiliksiä. Talvi on vihdoin takana!

Tuleva pitkä viikonloppu tuo mukanaan Wapun - tuon opiskelijoiden kovasti juhliman kevään merkkipäivän. Eiköhän siirrytäkin samoin tein sen viettoon! 8)

I'm blogging in the airrr... Yes, we really are airborne! Lufthansa long haul flights do offer nowadays very affordable internet connection via WiFi. This is the first time to try it, they just have introduced it to the Frankfurt-Bangalore leg this year.

Oh yeah, now it is time for one week holiday without even a slightest hint of work in mind. Ok, I have to agree that I shouldn't have opened even the internet because of that, but this is not work related - is it?

Now, one week at Goa awaits us. So, if all goes well it will be sun, sand and relaxation and totally different culture and food for a week for us. The mobile packet data does not work there (I presume) so there won't be pictures appearing this week. I will provide the highlights afterwards.

Tämä teksti on lähetetty reilun kymmenen kilometrin korkeudesta - aivan oikeasti! Lufthansa on ryhtynyt tarjoamaan pitkänmatkan lennoilla Internet-yhteyttä varsin edulliseen hintaan. Pitihän sitä heti tietysti koikeilla! ;) Tämä ei ollut vielä viime syksynä käytössä kun käytin Lufthansaa Intia-reissulla, mutta vuodenvaihteessa on tilanne vaihtunut.

Luvassa on viikko lomaa ja tarkoitus on pitää työajatukset kaukana poissa. OK, varmaan jos olisin halunnut pitää työjutut kaukana tämä Internettikin olisi pitänyt jättää kokeilematta..

Noniin, edessä on siis viikko Intian Goalla. Odotukset ovat että olosuhteet ovat Suomen kylmään lopputalveen nähden hyvät: Aurinkoa, hiekkarantaa, hyvää ruokaa ja outoa erilaista kulttuuria. Kännykkäverkot eivät välitä tuollapäin bittejä, joten kuvia reissulta ilmaantuu vasta jälkikäteen.

Heading for holidays - Loma on ovella

In just couple days we both will be travelling. This time it will be for holidays, and this time it really is for both of us - whoa! We will be heading to Goa, India for one week. OK, it will be work-related as I will continue the trip in "working mode" for one week at India after we return from the beaches.

In any case holiday is goooood! (You've seen the latest pictures ;-) After the weeks abroad the Real Spring (tm) will be here. As a guaranteed sign for that there will be the 1st of May celebrations.

Muutaman päivän kulttua olemme molemmat reissun päällä. Tällä kertaa kyseessä on lomamatka, ja me molemmat olemme tosiaan lähdössä! Hip! Määränpää on Goa, Intiassa ja aikaa on varattu reilu viikko. Senverran töihin liittyvä tämäkin matka on että mie jatkan töiden merkeissä Intiassa vielä toisen viikon.

Jokatapauksessa loma tulee todella tarpeeseen! (Olette varmaan nähneet viimeisimmät kuvat 8). Kun palaamme reissulta on vastassa Suomessa Oikea Kevät (tm). Tämän varmana merkkinä on Vapun juhliminen toukokuun alussa.
